Austrian casino laws struck down as illegal The European Court of Justice ruled a week ago that Austria’s new casino laws were a violation of European Union laws and that the country’s government must adjust their laws accordingly. The ECJ ruled that Austria’s laws were illegal because they were anti-competitive and catered to a monopoly for Casinos Austria AG. In addition, the ECJ determined that the casino laws established by Austria were illegal because they restricted the freedom of establishment. The case was brought to the ECJ after a German national was fined by the Austrian government for not applying for a license to operate games of chance in the country.
